Fitzgibbons' Budget Funerals

#IrishFilm: CCCahoots’ short film FitzGibbons’ Budget Funerals completes production

Cork based comedy troupe and production company, CCCahoots, have just finished their first short film, FitzGibbons’ Budget Funerals, and will release it onto the national and international Film Festival circuit, forthwith!

The short film is a mockumentary about a Cork family who detects a gap in the market for affordable funeral services. Teddy (Tadhg Hickey) has a background in grave-digging; his sister Linda (Laura O’ Mahony) is a would-be church musician, and their brother Ken (Dominic MacHale) has been coaxed into tying the whole thing together as Funeral Director. With a documentary crew on the premises and an eye-catching advert in the local paper, all FitzGibbons’ Budget Funerals need now is their first customer.

The film is written and directed by Tadhg Hickey, with additional material by Laura O’Mahony and Dominic MacHale. This is Hickey’s first venture into films as director, having directed all of CCCahoots’ viral online video content over the last couple of years. Hickey is an award-winning comedy writer and performer and has written and starred in numerous prize-winning short films including Uisce Beatha (Filmmakers’ Prize, DC Shorts Festival, Washington) and Nietzsche No.5 (Best Comedy, Fastnet Short Film Festival).

FitzGibbons’ Budget Funerals is produced by Claire O Connell and Bertie Brosnan and involves much of the team that made the multi-award winning The Young Offenders, including Patrick Jordan (Director of Photography); Daniel Crowley (Sound Operator) and Dominic MacHale (actor).

The film is fronted by the CCCahoots troupe (Tadhg Hickey, Dominic MacHale, and Laura O’Mahony). This trio has created, written, and performed all of CCCahoots’ critically appraised output with RTE thus far which amounts to two web series; a successful TV pilot; and contributions to RTE’s comedy show – Republic of Telly.

They have been described by fellow industry professionals as follows:

  • The Rubberbandits: “Pure clever man. Irish TV could do with more of that.”
  • Eddie Doyle, Head of Comedy, RTE: “CCCahoots are one of the brightest and most original comedy prospects RTE have had in recent years.”
  • Lenny Abrahamson: “Excellent.”
  • Channel 4 Comedy Dept. : “Excellent performances; such a great range!”

CCCahoots are currently developing their first sitcom with RTE, as well as preparing for their first national tour. For more details visit

It was almost surreal to direct my first short film with such an incredible cast and crew. Paddy [Jordan] and the CCCahoots troupe were essentially directing with me so it was a cushy little number truth be told! We believe this is one of the strongest things CCCahoots have done and we can’t wait for people to see it!
Tadhg Hickey, Director

The film is supported by RTE.
