Kilkenny-born/LA -based visual artist David OReilly’s new computer game Everything has won the Jury Prize – Animation at VIS Vienna Shorts. By doing so Everything becomes the first game or interactive project to ever qualify for Academy Award consideration in the Best Animated Short category.
Everything, is the complete opposite of how people commonly conceive of games‚ there are no levels to be reached, instead there is only the possibility to become anyone and everything. The insight acquired along the way represents a reframing. For more on the game see its official website.
David OReilly won a Golden Bear for Best Short Film 2009 for Please Say Something, and competed in Berlin in 2008 with RGB XYZ.
The VIS jury statement read “The Jury Prize – Animation goes to a film, which beyond being entertaining has a strong poetic and philosophical theme. It serves a highly educational purpose, including an important political statement, that encourages to let our egos dissolve and gain a new perspective on the world. The award goes to Everything, by David OReilly.”
